A curious life, closely observed
Scientist, teacher, and now painter — K. B. Dabhade has spent his life paying attention to the natural world.
The long arc
K. B. Dabhade trained as an aquaculture and marine life researcher, devoting more than four decades to the study of fisheries, coastal ecosystems and the species that depend on them. His work moved between the field and the laboratory — counting, sampling, recording, and teaching the next generation to do the same.
Education was always part of the practice. He mentored students by the water, translated dense science into plain language, and treated every estuary as a classroom. Publications and projects accumulated, but so did a quieter conviction: that careful observation is its own kind of art.
Retirement did not slow the looking — it redirected it. With time finally his own, he picked up a brush and discovered that the discipline of research translated effortlessly to the canvas. What began as a single painting became a daily ritual, and the ritual became a body of work that continues to grow.
Milestones
Into fisheries science
Began formal research in aquaculture and marine biology, working across hatcheries, estuaries and coastal field sites.
Field work & publication
Led and contributed to projects documenting marine life, water quality and sustainable fisheries practice.
Mentoring the next tide
Guided students and early-career researchers, pairing rigorous method with a love of the living coast.
A painting a day
Turned full attention to painting, building a daily practice and an ever-growing personal gallery.
